About MAO

A Collaborative Youth Ensemble

The Millennium Academy Orchestra (MAO) is a vibrant training orchestra for students, created through the partnership of Amicis Sinfonia and the Millennium Youth Orchestra. MAO brings together enthusiastic young musicians from all over Hong Kong, offering them a supportive place to grow as performers, teammates, and leaders. We believe in encouraging every member while challenging them to achieve their personal best, whether they are preparing for music exams, working on audition pieces, or simply hoping to feel more at home on stage.

At MAO, students learn much more than just notes and rhythms. Guided by experienced conductors and tutors, members participate in regular rehearsals, sectionals, and masterclasses that build essential ensemble skills ⸺ like listening, communication, and leadership. Our programme features a wide range of music, from classical masterpieces to contemporary works and festival favourites. Each student receives individual feedback, helping them to improve technique, deepen their musical understanding, and find their own artistic voice.

MAO also values the bigger picture: we see music as a bridge between school, community, and the professional world. Through public concerts, workshops, and collaborations with other groups, students gain valuable stage experience and learn what it means to be part of a musical community. We encourage curiosity and discipline, helping young musicians build the confidence they need for further studies or competitions.

Finally, MAO is committed to broadening horizons. Our students take part in international tours, exchange programmes, and festivals, where they meet young musicians from around the world, experience new cultures, and share the joy of music-making at a high level. These experiences help students appreciate diversity in music and in life, and prepare them to become not just skilled musicians, but open-minded and thoughtful members of the global community.

Our Missions

01

Educational Impact

We provide structured, high-level music education that strengthens technical foundations and deepens musical understanding. Through weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching and one-on-one guidance, members learn to cooperate and show respect for one another, building a sense of team belonging and friendships.

02

Professional Development

We cultivate the habits, discipline, and ensemble skills required for a capable young musician. Under the direction of experienced conductors and tutors, members learn orchestral repertoire, ensemble etiquette, and performance practices that prepare them for conservatory auditions, competitions, and careers in music.

03

International Exchange

We create meaningful opportunities for cultural and artistic exchange by participating in overseas festivals, workshops and collaborative projects. Performing abroad and working with international faculty broaden our members’ perspectives, foster cross-cultural friendships, and expose them to world-class standards of music-making.

04

Performance Excellence

We strive for outstanding artistry and expression in every concert and competition. By performing at renowned venues, taking part in masterclasses, and engaging in focused rehearsals, the orchestra fosters musical confidence, expressive range and a polished ensemble sound that reflects pride in craft and continuous improvement. Our orchestra regularly performs at renowned venues and has achieved top honors, including the 1st Prize at the 2024 Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival.
